Traditional Indian carpet weaving is one of the country's greatest craft legacies, with roots stretching back to the Mughal court of the 16th century. The workshops of Bhadohi, Agra, Jaipur, and Kashmir have supplied the world's finest carpet collectors, emperors, and royal households for over 400 years — and the same techniques are practised today.
At Rug Store, our traditional carpet collection draws directly from this heritage. Each rug is hand-knotted or hand-tufted in Bhadohi by artisans who have inherited their patterns, colour sense and technical skill through generations. These are not reproductions — they are living examples of an unbroken craft tradition.
Traditional carpet quality is measured by knot count (KPSI — knots per square inch for knotted rugs), pile material, and dye quality:
Traditional carpets are experiencing a renaissance in Indian interior design — as open-plan modern apartments seek warmth, texture and cultural connection, a traditional hand-knotted rug becomes the most powerful single piece to achieve all three.
A traditional Persian medallion rug in a minimal contemporary living room creates a striking visual tension that feels curated and intentional. Pair with low-profile modern furniture and white walls for maximum impact.
Turn the rug over — hand-knotted rugs have visible individual knots on the back, with slight irregularities that confirm handwork. Hand-tufted rugs have a canvas backing with a uniform grid. Machine-made rugs have perfectly uniform backs with a plastic or jute secondary backing.
Genuine hand-knotted traditional rugs from fine wool or silk, with high KPSI and natural dyes, can appreciate in value over decades — particularly signed pieces or rugs from prestigious workshop towns. Hand-tufted rugs are excellent quality but are not considered collectible investments.
The finest traditional carpets can be displayed as wall hangings using purpose-made carpet hanging rods — this protects them from foot traffic while allowing full visual appreciation of the design. Rodding through a sleeve sewn onto the top edge distributes weight evenly.
