Most rugs and carpets, when placed on smooth hard floors, will shift with foot traffic. Over time, a sliding rug becomes a trip hazard. Anti-skid (also called anti-slip or non-slip) backing addresses this in two ways:

Friction grip: A rubber or latex backing increases the coefficient of friction between the rug and the floor, preventing sliding
