History of Rugs in the land of Turkey: Rug weaving in Turkey dates back to the 11th century, but the successful production of rugs was by the Seljuk during 11th to 13th century. During the reign of Ottoman in14th century, the rugs producing underwent revolutionary changes, rugs weaving gained a prominent importance and their appeared animal figures on these rugs during this age.

In the 15th century, the rugs had wide range of animal motifs combined with geometrical patterns, it was known as Holbein Rugs, and it was the most popular rugs of the century. 16th century saw the dawn of second successful period in rug manufacturing and the rugs of this period are know as “palace rugs” as its design and color was determined by the palace artists and then sent to the weaving centers. Some of the designs used in palace rugs are even practiced in today Turkey rugs.

Throughout these centuries from 16th, 17th and 18th century the regions like Gördes (Ghordes), Kula, Milas, Ladik, Mucur, Kirsehir, Bandirma and Canakkale (Dardanelles) gained the recognition as rug-weaving centers. The rugs produced in these regions are known as "Transylvanian Rugs" as they are primarily found in churches in Transylvania.

The rugs woven in Hereke during the19th and 20th centuries were famous and the material used to produce are silk of fine quality and even today these quality rugs are produced, it has a grand status in the world market.

In 1982, the government-administered a project DOBAG (Natural Dye Research and Development Project), this brought in drastic change in the weaving of rug throughout Turkey, to meet the demand of Oriental carpets, and to use wool of handspun with vegetable-dyed. The designs are geometric and curvilinear floral motifs woven with the collection of colors like full-bodied reds, blues, teals, greens, and grey, the light shades like peach and ivory and carving to influence the designs on the rugs.

Basmakc

Turkey rugs swamped in today market is Basmakc a wool rug featuring geometric patterns inspired by Caucasian and traditional Turkish designs.

Burdurs

Another famous quality of Turkey rug is Burdurs they have the design patter of angular Persian Heriz available in traditional and contemporary colorations.

Hereke rugs

Hereke rugs are popularly known for its quality and are available in wool and silk material with wide varieties.

There was vast growth in the rugs weaving industry in the last decade; it witnessed the popularity of kilims rugs featuring a broad range of geometric patterns. These rugs are merged with Karabagh variety and to appeal the west, these rugs are populating with the stylish floral motifs.

The use of vegetable dyes and handspun wool, and the creative designs and patterns have a great attraction.
