RugStore: What is Oriental rug?

When the thought of purchasing a rug arise, we only remember the word Oriental rug. What it actually means, have you ever thought. Many get confused and feel machine made rugs and hand made rugs are same and call it as oriental rugs but it is wrong.

The handmade rugs produced by the eastern countries are known as Oriental rugs. The Oriental or eastern countries involved in weaving of rugs are Afghanistan, China, India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan, Tibet, Turkey, in old Soviet Union some of the southern territories like Azerbaijan or Armenia, in Balkan countries especially Romania and Albania, in north Africa Morocco & Egypt are the countries concerned with weaving of oriental rugs. The rugs produced in these regions are basically hand knotted with pile or flat woven. Western European countries or United States even though they make hand weave rugs, they are not termed as oriental rugs.

Oriental rug with its hand knots is unique and easy to identify but still there are few variety of rug weaving resembles oriental rugs, these rugs are hand tufted rugs. They look similar to that of Oriental rug but they are not an Oriental rug, the reason is, it is not made of hand knots.
