History of Egypt rug: Egypt has a long history in the art of rug weaving, from the 16th to 18th century Egypt was under the control of Turkish. The weave during this period can be categorized in to two periods.

During the first period Mamluk rug was famous, from 15th century to first half of the 16th century, Mamluk medallion carpet are produced in Cairo, these rugs have various bright colors like light blue, yellow-green, and raspberry red. The motifs used are medal lions, plant designs and complex geometric designs. These rugs have differentiating characteristic the borders and the central design doesn’t have color contrast. They are finely-knotted silk in glowing and shinning colors.

Their came a complete change by the conquest of Ottoman Turks in 1517, the rugs during this period had the inspiration from the Anatolian designs—instead of geometric pattern curvilinear design are began to use. After the decline of Ottoman Empire in 18th century, the rug manufacturing decreased subsequently.

In 1950s due to restriction on import of rugs, Egypt restarted the production of handmade rugs in and around Cairo. These rugs of contemporary era are of great quality but they are manufactured in low number
