RugStore: How to count the knots?
Quality of the rug is marked by the knot density. If you don’t know how to count the knot, it is very simple, first count the number of knots along the warp per inch, then number of knots along the weft per inch and multiply warp knot count with weft knot count to find the number of knots used per square inch.
There are some difficulties in counting the knots from the back of the rug due to its structure. If the rug warps lie on the same plane, it show two squares for each knot along the width on the back of the rug.
Weaver sometimes uses offset warp, on the back of the rug it resembles single square, as the alternate warps hides. Mainly the warps of Turkish knot rugs are usually offset. To identify the structure of the weave the knots on the back of the rugs is implied and the knot can be counted with help of colors used in the rug across the width, you can find the pair of color knots it is to be counted as single knot or else if lot of single colored knot, the warp is offset, the rugs from India and china usually use offset warps.
