RugStore: Knots are the Major building blocks of a rug

The quality of the rug depends on the number of knots per square inch (KPSI) or square decimeter, especially in workshop rugs or the city rugs. On the other hand this rule is not applicable to some rugs produced in village or by nomadic people. The value of these rugs depends on designs (the style are mainly from own imagination), dyes and materials used (which are accessible in nature around them). The predominance of heritage and simplicity are features of nomadic group or village rugs with the knot range from 25 to 100 knot per sq. inch. In city rugs the use of knot are important and it range from 100 to 1000 knot per square inch, due to the necessity for clarity of intricate curvilinear designs, also foundation in pure silk requires more knots, where as in wool or cotton foundation the knot need is comparatively less due to its thickness.

In hand made rug every single knot is tied by hand. Skilled weaver can tie 6 knots per minutes, to weave 9x12 foot rug with the density of 150 knots per square inch, it requires 6,480 hours for a trained weaver. If the weaver works for 8 hours a day, it will take 810 days, if the work is shared by two or three weavers, time consumption is reduced by half.
