RugStore: Birth of Real Silk
Silk is a natural fiber produced by the silkworm spinning itself by white or yellow cocoons. The silkworm or bombyx mori (Latin it mean silkworm of the mulberry tree) feed on mulberry leaves. The cocoon covering of silkworm is a single silk fiber with a length of several thousand feet. Cocoons are boiled to reap silk, without breaking the fiber to form pile. Later the pile is spun into silk thread or yarn. Silk is basically know for it excellent strength, texture, and luster.
Chemical composition of natural silk is C15H23O6N5. Natural silk is fundamentally made of amino acids mainly composed of glycine and others are alanine, serine, tyrosine, valine, glutamic acid. Oriental rugs give priority to natural silk as it is strong, flexible; the use of dye on silk gives marvelous attractiveness. Other artificial silk are available like mercerized cotton – treated with Caustic soda at room temperature to fatten the thread to increase shinning, Rayon – cellulose treated with chemical to form viscose to produce chemical fiber and it is later spun into to yarn.
